The coral of Sciacca

Sicilian coral collected intensively from 1875 until the first two decades of the '900, salmon pink color, very intense to paler pink.

Variety of corallium rubrum lay in huge quantities under the surface has shaped and tapered long branches up to 8 mm thickness. In less than 30 miles off the coast of Sciacca and at a depth between 40 and 200 meters, depending on the area.

It all began one day in July 1831 when, in the low tide called "Bummolo", the sea suddenly opened and a volcano erupted into an inferno of fire presenting the appearance of an island. This was named Ferdinandea in honor of King Ferdinand II, Duke of Bourbon. It was not a long life and in the winter of the same year sank into the abyss again carrying "red gold" of which it was filled.
Obviously, such a treasure was not destined to remain hidden in the depths of the sea. In 1875 Berto Ammareddu, Captain of a paranza (couple of boats that hauled a trawl), discovered that some miles from the coast of Sciacca another coral bank (Banco Graham) had emerged from a layer of mud. Within a few years other two banks were discovered: one closer to the coast called "Mediterranean" and one more off called "Forane".

The news spread quickly throughout Europe, this resulted in the indiscriminate pillaging of these banks that ended inexorably with extinction due to fishing techniques adopted.

Only in recent decades, these banks are recovering in growth
